In 1961 when the country did finally open its doors to the modern world, visitors got an opportunity to visit the land that had all along remained a mystery to them.

It was the nation’s third monarch, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck who lifted the policy of self imposition and eventually, mainstream tourism gradually started taking roots in the mid 1970s.
